Not PP, but there is a huge difference between self-selecting in PK or early elementary school (feeders) and self-selecting in middle school.
By 4th grade, you have a much better sense of what kind of learner your kid is.

On the tour at BASIS, they said unabashedly that they want a school of hard-working nerds who don't mind not having a field or play area and that they know it won't be the right choice for everyone but they weren't going to change. It wasn't the right choice for my family and we stayed at the DCI feeder for 5th grade, but I appreciated that they were very upfront about what type of kids thrive there. I wish that DCI had a track for high achieving but more laid back kids, but my impression is that apart from math and language that tracking won't happen until maybe 9th grade?

Exactly. It's absurd to say that families choose DCI for the bilingual education the same way that families choose Basis for the rigor. You can take language immersion seriously and prioritize it in school selection, but you can also very easily coast and do the minimum necessary in the language and get through with terribly weak language skills. You absolutely cannot coast your way through Basis and expect not to get held back or counseled out. I know kids at DCI who HATE their language, but didn't get into Latin so DCI it was. They put in as much work toward their language as they did at their feeder, but DCI just tracks them on easier language courses and all is well.

COVID has affected everyone and if you look at DCI, they are doing better than the overwhelming majority of middle and high schools in the city.

Their scores are actually pretty close to Latin. Basis self selects so not sure why people on here use them as a comparison. Apples to oranges.

Also, with the feeder system, language requirement, etc. DCI can't fairly be considered 100% lottery. So, DCI is even more "selective" than BASIS, whatever that means.

Thus, DCI's poor results seem even worse by comparison.

Families self select, meaning only families that will fit with their methodology choose to lottery and/or take seats at BASIS.

+1. Basis also self selects by not providing support or accommodating all families. Look into how many at risk, IEP, ELL kids they have and you will be shocked. They also counsel our kids that don’t meet their expectations or can’t fit into their rigid structure of academic requirements.

No one suggested BASIS families don't self select (although BASIS does not self-select, families do). Of course they do. The issue many of us are taking with you and others is the idea that somehow every charter is not admitting students that self select. At DCI it is kids who want/have an aptitude for bilingual education. You and others seem to be arguing that kids choose DCI because it is better than their IB option but not because they really want to be there or are a great fit, yet you ignore that same dynamic exists at BASIS as well. The mental gymnastics you all have gone through to pretend that only BASIS's lottery results in self selection and DCI's or Latin's doesn't is laughable.

Not the PP you were talking to but you apparently do NOT know much about DCI's feeders. They run the range in terms of what kids testing scores would be at 6th grade, with the biggest feeder (DC Bilingual) having the average lowest scores from what I saw the last year I saw a comparison of feeder schools 5th grade scores. AND every year DCI admits lottery kids for 6th and 9th. So the idea that a bigger school that has a variety of students feeding into it AND accepts lottery kids too is like BASIS which is ALL self-selection and smaller, is absurd.
