Subject: Does your riding 6th grader in public school have a phone?
If you think your kid needs a phone, either for you to contact them or for them to contact you, then get them a phone.
By that, I mean a DUMB phone. One that can place calls, maybe text and has some basic functions (like alarm clock, calendar, etc).
They exist. And they are great. They can't download apps, stream music, or sneak social media.
But parents can still reach them, and they can still be privy to social outings with friends by joining the group texts.
In fact, my DD has basically lost interest in the phone, because she can't watch youtube or play games. It's just a phone

No way. Most of the 6th graders with phones we know seem to have lost interest in activities other than using the phone. DD has a Gizmo, and we may get iWatch soon. We’ll see about a phone in 8th grade.

Rising 7th grade and doesn’t have a phone, he never asked and is still not interested anyway. We will delay this a long as possible.
School schedule is pretty much routine. If there is urgency, school will call me.

My almost 11-year-old does not have a phone. She says everyone does. I don't care. Kids don't need phones.

It's not like I gave her an iPhone. She had a super cheap phone that only allowed her to call three people - me, my best friend (who is her emergency contact) and grandma - plus 911. Also, in 1995, you could give your kid a quarter to carry around and they could use a pay phone.
I believe it was 35 cents.
