Its a beautiful space, however our number for Latin Cooper has dropped substantially this past week.... (or last two frankly) so guess maybe this news impacted things.... and yet BASIS still not moving... I'd think Latin and BASIS impacted eachother's WL.

Also the Kirov Academy buildings are actually quite stunning on the inside. I've been googling the photos (but have only been in the main foyer and three performance spaces on the inside) and it is truly a masterpiece. Kudos to the acquisition teams! Truly a hidden gem!

This. We went with Capital City instead. It was between them and ITS.


When my daughter did ballet at Kirov, the site just wasn't terrible. We zipped up North Cap to get there from Capitol Hill, there was always plenty of parking, the building wasn't loud or dark inside, and the grounds had some nice greenery. Not sure what all this fuss is about.

Going to swing this a different direction...

So if Latin sends its 5/6th to this location, this is DEF a great move, low key. With YY having its youngest here it reduces congestion on the turnaround on Taylor street (Kirov has a rear turnaround by the fences and three separate rear side entrances in addition to the front entrance. This also creates a somewhat insulated environment for the younger Latin students, but is somewhat metro accessible (H4/H8) for youngers, but could be easily facilitated if Latin offered one of its vans for daily shuttle service between the two campuses. YY is a short and feasible walk for the youngers. I def see it as a win win.

Come on, the site will be redeveloped if the two charter schools purchase it. A high fence can be built the current parking lot will no longer be there.

Have you even driven by that area? Where exactly do you think the teachers and staff will park? On north Capitol street and Harewood road where there is no street parking? Or the small, small street behind the school which basically has no spaces with houses there.


It’s also a terrible area for drop off and pick up. It’s right at the corner of North Capitol and Harewood. There is just no space for it and no place anywhere to pull up or stop.

Building is small, very busy intersection, no street parking, no green space. Driving down North Capitol to the school and back downtown wil also be a mess as Nirth Capitol is one of the main thoroughfare in and out of the city.

Kirov has over 50 spaces behind the building... it is a lot larger than people realize. Yu Ying has used the facility many times over the years.

It's currently 50K sq ft with plan for additional space to be built. Also close to CUA (leases some fields) and Turkey Thicket

Agree. YY should stick to its manageable current size/nice campus.

The program is no longer wildly popular, like a decade ago. School closures exposed the limits of what they're trying to do without offering 2-way immersion (without a cohort of bilingual Chinese-speaking families in the school community). They're digging farther and farther into their WL with each passing year.

I don’t get why YuYing is interested in Kirov when they already have a lovely, spacious green campus and the program struggles to fulfill its mission. The kids spoken Chinese just isn’t good overall for a 50% immersion program and their ELA scores on PARCC have never been good in view of their demographics (considering that very few students could be considered bilingual). YY would be better off resisting the temptation to expand, period.
