We grow about 70% of our fruits and veggies. We have chickens that lay plenty for our family plus enough to share. We live in the country where wildlife is plentiful. We have a well plus a pond on our property. And I have food stored that would last my family (including my adult kids) at least six months. We are always prepared.

I don’t think we will see massive food shortages.

If it's bad enough someone will shoot and eat your dogs if they're allowed outside. (Source--mother who grew up in wartime/post war Germany.)

Yes, after six years of a devastating war that destroyed a great deal of their infrastructure people would shoot and eat your dog. All the animals in the Berlin Zoo were killed and eaten and most of the trees in Berlin were cut down for firewood. The Russians quite literally raped their way through Berlin.

I'm certainly not of the mindset that it could never happen here, but we are light years away from it.

In which parallel universe did this happen? I've slipped through so many wormholes at this point that I can't keep up. I swear I've never heard of this...

I heard from a tour guide on a Berlin bike tour years ago and it appears he may have exaggerated a little according to this article, although it does mention hungry Germans killing and eating animals. The majority were killed in bombings. Another article says Russian soldiers butchered some for meat.

Well you're proving my point -- you only want to hear from people with one perspective, and agreeing with you makes that normal. Seems like a surprising number of people are prepping to some extent. So I guess that's normal now.

I count 8, and that's assuming no people double posted, which absolutely isn't the case. That doesn't make it normal.

Also, there's a big difference between "I'll keep a few extra items in the basement" and . . . you people.

Even at the height of the pandemic and supply chain disruptions, the grocery stores were full of food. They were just full of food that no one really wanted to hoard or eat. It was food. It was edible. People just didn’t want to eat it 🤷

I grew up in Florida and the rule of thumb during hurricane season is that you should be prepared to go without electricity or running water for some period of time - 3 days? 3 weeks? I can’t remember the duration. And if there was no electricity or water the roads were likely impassible because of downed trees and power lines and stores and restaurants could be closed. We usually had a few gallons of water, some canned food, bread in the freezer, extra peanut butter, some shelf stable stuff on hand just in case. We did sometimes have to use that food after a storm.

I assume there are also guidelines about being prepared for winter storms, tornadoes, and earthquakes in other parts of the country.

Point is, I think that some level of prepping is really quite normal and rational for a lot of people. A garage full of supplies seems a bit extreme, but I also get it that after the last couple of years in particular people want to feel like they’re in control of something.

Maybe this deserves a spinoff thread, but I'm starting to think the whole Giant gas points thing is a sham. The last few times the 20/30 cents per gallon have not reflected. You have to watch closely. I've used the points for years and never really watched it until recently.

Not the OP, but I live in an apartment without a balcony or fire escape and no direct sunlight. I can't even keep a plant alive in my apartment. Not everyone has the privilege of being able to grow their own food.

Learning to grow a plant isn’t a privilege. Poor people around the world have done it for centuries just to survive.

It really isn't. Look at the prepper community and also remember the Mormons are the ultimate preppers...The current LDS church asks members to have 1 year of supplies at all times and always has. If a kid is in a house-share, they are still encouraged to have 2 weeks for each person in the home. So are LDS ppl not normal?

Look, I grew up around a lot of Mormons and have known a lot more since. To a person, with the exception of one guy, they were lovely people and I enjoyed/enjoy their company, but no, this is not normal in the larger population.
