making an awful lot over honor council. are there any other roles that are hand-picked?
Honors and advanced classes. Senior athletic committee, peer leaders. But again, most importantly, advanced classes.
Dont forget stewards
Honors and advanced classes are grade dependent or have actual entrance exams - I’m not wild about the extra exams but it is what it is. I understand the point about peer leader but that seems driven by the need to have some one responsible and effective in the role. Not everyone is a good fit.

What roles are “given”? Don’t the students vote?
Only for student government. The rest of the roles that students compete for are decided by facutly and there is zero transparency about qualifications and the reasons behind the selections. But they almost always go to the favored ones. Side note: my daugther was called stupid more than once by a teacher at that school.

Same teacher. Never said outright, "hey, you're stupid," but said things like this: Don't ask such a stupid question like that ever again. That is a stupid answer. Why are you asking such a stupid question? Constantly. She stopped speaking up in the class or having meetings with the teacher, which, for a kid who needs supports, are basically required. Complete mess and nobody cared, least of all the academic dean. Thankfully, she made it out of there with her self esteem in tact, because she's a great person and bright enough to know the problem was with that teacher and administrator. But if I had to do it over, I would never have sent her there.
