I grew up in Wheaton in the 80's and I remember Freaks (jean jackets) and Grits (leather jackets). They had a big fight over by Freaks' Bridge in the Village. A guy got stabbed. Another time, a Grit party was invaded by Freaks and a guy got stabbed with a pitchfork. These were white teenagers, btw.
Is this for real. It reads like the Outsiders.
That sounds so tame compared to what we see now, though.
It really happened! I was young, but my sister dated a Freak.
I have more stories. The Freaks were from Viers Mill Village, the Grits were from the "other side of the Village". The whole neighborhood was/still is a sh1thole, but the other side of the Village was slightly less poor (hence the leather jackets). A Grit, who was actually a really nice guy, was driving his moped and a Freak drove him off the road and he died.
I believe it, I went to school with a lot of Veirs Mill guys.I remember one of them getting stabbed at a field party near Magruder High in the early 80's.

Silver Spring, Rockville, Gaithersburg, Germantown....just assume it exists.
Yes to all of these. And do not expect any sympathy or conversation on your post Op. Most of the posters on this tread are social justice live and let live idiots who will call you a "Karen" for judging a neighborhood's safety on gang activity or proximity. Listen to your instincts and do what feels right for your family. I suggest you visit your local police department, they will gladly inform you on the areas of concern. And yes, I'm sure I'll get flamed for this suggestion. So DO NOT care.
As a Rockville resident, this is news to me. Where in Rockville are the gangs? Can't speak to the other cities, but I have never felt or seen any gang activity in Rockville. Where and what gangs are these?
BTW I grew up out west with real gangs in schools in the 80s/90s.
.. and to add.. I'm no crunchy liberal. I'm an Independent and I'm pro-SROs.
You are naive if you think there are no gangs in Rockville. I am older, but recall gangs in Lincoln Park, Twinbrook, the Dogwood Park area, Randolph Hills, MS13. They may not live up to the west coast gangs, but gangs none the less.
There were never gangs in Lincoln Park, just black families.
Twinbrook had the brook boys… most are lawyers and accountants now

Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:Not every area in Montgomery county has gangs. Potomac, the western side of Rockville bordering Potomac, Darnestown, probably Poolesville, and probably all of Bethesda do not have gangs or gang activity.
OP you can research where the MOCO gang task force focuses on to identify the areas with the highest density. Wheaton, Silver Spring Gaithersburg, and Germantown. Yes these areas are large so there are gang free areas in some of those areas. The Kentlands in Gaithersburg is not a gang place but it has a Gaithersburg address.
The school clusters are trickier though. There isn’t gang activity at Churchill, Wootton, Whitman. I’ve never heard of gang issues in WJ, BCC, QO,Poolesville. The rest have issues. RM is a great high school with an amazing IB program but they have gangs. The rest all have problems with Wheaton, Einstein, Blair, Seneca, MacGruder, Gaithersburg, Kennedy being the worst. Not sure about Damascus, Sherwood or Paint branch but probably a small amount like RM.
Possibly except there is gang activity on Old Georgetown road near 270 spur.
Gang activity does not mean they live there, btw.
Also Churchill, Whitman and Wootton have high drug/drinking culture/activity … since the offenders are white they are not a “gang”. White girls are more likely to be raped by a white boy, so not exactly “safe from crime”.
