Kids can socialize, but then get to eat outside. It’s really not a tragedy
What is the reason to eat outside when they are all socializing together indoors when out of school?
A school has every right to apply it’s own rules and make plans for on campus mitigation during school hours. They cannot fully control the risks families take off campus on their own time (though it’s unfortunate when people take big risks that then create more likelihood of bringing COVID to school). How do people not understand this?
Totally agree.
+2 And then, more cynically, there is the legal angle: if someone's DC contracts COVID at a school, there's bound to be a lawsuit. We all know how litigious people are in this area.

To not be a d*ck
That is not an answer to the question.
+1. Let’s rephrase the question: What is the reason to require children to eat outdoors in sub freezing temperatures?
To not be a d^ck
Very persuasive and informative. You are quite the philosopher. Are your kids’ analytical skills this strong?

If these schools are so elite and educating the country’s future leaders someone should muster the brainpower to come up with a better solution. My kid is not at a Big 3 and yet they have found solutions to keep everyone safe without unduly degrading their learning and social environment through masking, testing, and social distancing - including - gasp - indoor eating in small groups.
