My son is a 9th grader at Mercersburg and he’s having a fantastic first year. I definitely suggest you go on College Confidential’s boarding school board… there are several swim teams parents there who will happily answer questions about the program.

My daughter is a current freshman so she applied last year when there were no in-person revisit days. She had a really hard time choosing because of this - we would have pretty much killed to get on campus and see what a school day was like there. I found her mentality was very different after March 10 when she knew exactly what her options were (as opposed to just choosing where she wanted to apply). That’s where I think revisit days are the most helpful - picturing yourself living at the school in a concrete rather than abstract manner. I also think a revisit day would have quelled a lot of the “what ifs” she has about the schools she turned down - those what ifs seem to crop up whenever she has a bad day.

Curious - why not St. Andrew's?

My kid also passed on St. Andrews in Delaware. The campus buildings are very clustered together and so felt claustrophobic to me and kid. Didn’t like glass walls in classrooms and it seemed to make current students distracted. Tour guide was very tense. Academics focused more on humanities than science. Formal style of school that kid saw in staff and students didn’t suit us. Finally, the school is I believe strict on what’s considered a sport for its athletic requirements. It was pretty easy to knock it off the list. Other families of course may have a totally different feeling about the school!

Visited campus. Great for engineers and fine arts students. Cranbrook Campus is gorgeous. School is more focused on the day students overall.

Great school, but mostly day students. There is a university level design school with links to some of the titans of modern design: Eames/Saarinen.

That's great to hear. So curious, how did your son know Govs was his favorite? Was it a specific activity vs curriculum vs faculty vs gut feeling? Maybe because we are applying during the pandemic, it's been hard for us to differentiate the schools beyond the obvious, like setting/location and casual/dress code. All the schools we are targeting seem to have a good community of happy students.

DC decided to apply to Exeter and Andover only. Chances of getting accepted are slim to none. But it’s their choice…at any rate, DC is quite happy at current school.

They're very helpful when you are narrowing it down after you're accepted. In our case (two kids) were quite torn between 2 schools, and were lucky enough to get into 6 of 7 they applied to. Important to them was also the relationship(s) with the coaches of their primary sports, in addition to the academics and general feel of the school. Definitely go to the top two choices, unless you already have a clear winner.
