I think they did the wear a color for a cause thing when my kid was there a couple years ago, during spirit week. My kid refuses to do any of the spirit week days on principal -- except for PJ day, because he thinks every day should be PJ day. I was a little concerned he would be socially shamed for not picking a cause to support (remember the Seinfeld episode where Kramer won't wear the ribbon?), but I think it was okay. It does strike me as a little odd to pressure people to pick a cause .... maybe they want to support multiple causes? This seems stressful for 8 year olds. I generally think all the spirit day things, except for PJ day, are more stressful for kids than fun.

I think the hardest part will be for these kids to get there. There were only two parties a year at CCES and now they are canceling one of them. Will Valentine’s Day be next? And what do they have to look forward to in middle school? Oh yeah, go check out the middle school shock thread. Too bad they can’t be kids in at least elementary school.

Too funny! I would hope by now you understand that the middle class kids subsidize the poor kids in mcps? Any school fee is "waived" (this means your cost is higher) and same goes for school supplies and sports specials that cost money, etc.


It's not a school fee. This is a PTA fundraiser. There is no option to go for free.

Per the flyer I got, it is $5. But I agree that the school should still do the Halloween parade.

Just flagging that this is the MCPS schools board. The thing we are talking about is, definitionally, Halloween as it's celebrated at MCPS schools. If you would like to talk about Halloween as it will be celebrated outside of MCPS schools, go find another board.




Halloween in every county in America is October 31st — this year, a Sunday. You’re not entitled to class parties, parades or costumes during school and no, Virginia, they have not “OMG cancelled Halloween!!!!!”

That sounds like fun, I would have loved dressing like a leaf instead of whatever craptastic costume my mom pulled together with stuff we already had around the house.

I think a lot of parents want to show everyone how creative they are and how adorable their little Larla is. Something that no one really cared about even 20 years ago.
