So are rolling through stop signs and exceeding the speed limit, and both of those illegal behaviors are far more common.

Is that why DC doesn't enforce traffic and parking violations, because ATV riders are also breaking the rules? Must be easy to be a DC politician just collecting a paycheck while claiming nothing can be done about anything.

To be honest with you, I think it’s not politically tenuous to enforce traffic laws against Black ATV riders but not conversely against White cyclists and actually reducing the laws that apply to cyclists. So by creating an area of de jure lawlessness with cycling has necessarily led to allowing de facto lawlessness with ATVs. If they go after ATVs then the expectation would be that cyclists need to be ready for tickets.

These guys jump sidewalks and ride into oncoming traffic or the wrong way down one-way streets. I see it frequently in my neighborhood. This isn't a nice, peaceful Sunday drive. They are out to get attention and wreak havoc. It's dangerous, illegal and needs to be stopped.

About 90% of what you wrote is stuff that people driving cars do also. I wish we'd work on that with even half the gusto you have for cracking down on ATV riders.

You routinely see drivers in cars jump sidewalks and ride into oncoming traffic on purpose? Where do you live?

I do too. I live in Montgomery County. Drivers have almost hit me many times, while I was driving, biking, and walking. I have never been almost hit by an ATV rider.

Terrible MD drivers are nothing new but definitely do not justify ATVs roaming the streets. Some of you sound like you want to turn our nation's capital into some hillbilly NASCAR festival. Maybe you should encourage a few Dennys and Waffle Houses to take over some of the more affluent chain restaurants to support your new DC.

You think it’s white NASCAR fans from the hills that are riding ATV’s through DC?!?!?!

Bwahahahahahahaha!!!!!

And that has nothing to do with these mental midgets playing Excitebike on public streets.

Of course it does. They're all illegal behaviors on the streets that make the streets less safe.

This is so far from a public safety issue as to be laughable. We really do not need to start cracking down on this.

You either don’t have much common sense or you have only just moved to a city a week ago. This mess is a slippery slope.

I have lived in DC for 20 years. This is not a slippery slope. They are not hurting anyone or being violent. They are inconveniencing people and showing off, as young people do all the time. Cracking down on this is akin to cracking down on kids hanging out in big groups at malls and annoying the other shoppers. It’s very normal kid behavior and ultimately harmless.

Y'all are so full of shit! If this was a bunch of white dudes you would be having a hissy fit. But because they are POC it is "cultural" ??? I'm black. This is not my culture.
Either it is a public safety hazard or it is not. Common sense says it is.

These criminals are also guilty of cultural appropriation! Riding dirt bikes and 4 wheelers has historically been a country boy activity.

Why? They've been doing this nonsense for at least five years. I don't like it but it could be worse.

Wokes would say that you have internalized whiteness. You probably value things like showing up on time, the written word, and the scientific method too, don't you?

Seen it multiple times. Do we have a local police force?

This is a cultural thing. You need to stop judging and deal with it.

You need to stop defending people who put lives in danger.

Can anyone elaborate on the bolded part please?

It pretty much means that if you are black and poor in the city you have carte blanche to terrorize other tax paying citizens and the inept mayor will do nothing about it. It is the reason police are leaving the city in droves, why bother?

BINGO but you forgot to add violate the law which all of those toys in use on city streets do.

Why are you treating these situations as if they are mutually exclusive? It's not either/or. Cars are a bigger problem because there are more of them. But that doesn't make the ATV riders safe and this behavior shouldn't be tolerated because cars are "more dangerous." How safe would it really be for you and your kids if you're walking down the sidewalk and you see 2-3 ATVs coming right at you at a high rate of speed?? Do you think those guy are going to slow down as they pass you? Or you think they'll jump back into the street to pass you? Ha.

Cars may jump sidewalks if hit in an accident, but they don't jump the curb to ride down the sidewalk the way ATV riders do. Cars typically do not block multiple lanes of traffic the way ATV riders do. Sounds like you haven't actually encountered ATV riders if you somehow think they are a safe alternative.

Drivers, you mean? Yes, drivers do.

The question isn't, is it dangerous to ride an ATV in a built-up area? The question is, what poses by far the most danger to road users in the area? And the answer is: drivers of cars.

So one wonders why some people focus on ATV riders instead of car drivers.

No. The question IS is it dangerous to ride an ATV in a built-up area? And the answer is obviously yes. That's why it's illegal.

Why are they driving an ATV in a built up area? Are they commuting to work?

Why can’t people do something for fun? They live in adC and want to drive ATV for fun. That’s it. If you don’t like it, stay in your home or move. It is your city but it’s also their city.

There are legal ways to have fun. I assume part of the fun is breaking the law. I think it's fun to break the speed limit. If you don't like it, stay in your home or move.
