I think it is a red herring - at least the intimation that he dies in a drunk driving incident. I think it may happen around that road trip but not because of the drunk driving. I feel like they wouldn't be so obvious so it must be a head-fake.

As the mom of a child of a certain age, I got a huge giggle out of the exchange between Rebecca and Randall (twice) - "I love you. I love you more. I love you most." Straight out of "Tangled" - quote from Mandy Moore's Rapunzel to Mother Gothel.
And as some one who acted for years before that child of a certain age, I laughed at what Miguel said to Kevin after the play - something every actor had heard - "I don't know how you remembered all those lines!" Like that's the hardest part!
