There has been speculation on this thread. Upthread someone said perhaps one of his lenders shared the documents and that sounds believable to me.
Trump's position that they are fake yet illegally obtained is tough to parse.

You know that the wealthy in 18th Century France were exempt from tax and this was one of the causes of the French Revolution, right? So thanks for the inside look, I want to soak y'all more than ever.
swear to god! I'm ready to hang these a-holes from the lamp post like yesterday. If this actually exposes how screwed up the tax code is & leads to reform it just might be worth the insanity of the past 4 years.
even more vomit inducing is that these are the very same people who advocate the boot straps mentality- Sure the rest of america could pull itself up from the bootstraps if we paid 21% in income tax like you grifters.
Wow. Quite a violent reaction there.
No one likes lyin’, cheatin’ amoral scum.

It's worse than broke. He owes people to the tune of 461M. Who are those people? He wouldn't be able to get a simple security clearance with even a fraction of that debt if he were not president. There's something wrong with that even if the rest is legal. Presidents must show tax returns and be held to the same clearance procedures as the rest of us.
Folks around here will probably know more about the security clearance process than I do, but I remember hearing tales of people being denied clearances because they were gay -- on account of blackmail potential. Owing $400 million is a lot more potential leverage than being gay!
That level of debt would make it very difficult to obtain a security clearance. It absolutely is a national security problem.

I think this will move the needle with non-entrenched people. The big question is how many of them there are at this point.
Naw, the report isn't seen as credible when considering the times previous failed attempts, they cried wolf too many times
Uh. No.
It’s the rare occassion that the democrats get to attack with such a simple and delightfully unnuanced statement.
Trump paid 750.00 in taxes.
So delightful. So easily digested.
You paid more taxes than Donald Trump. Boom.
Given the NYT article doesn't allege illegality, why does the tax code apparently allow this?
It's not up to the NYT to allege illegality. That is the NYAG's job.
The NYAG has alleged illegality and has been suing Trump and his family and the Trump Org for years, but the case is predicated on comparing the filed tax returns to the documents the Trump Org supplies to its bankers. That is why Trump has appealed to the Supreme Court once and lost and is about to go there again for a second time.
An innocent person doesn't go to these extremes.
