It's more elite than half the suggestions here

IDRC where the line is drawn. When I tell people where my DC goes, they’re impressed and I’m happy with that.

It is subjective. Why waste time on it?

Let’s be honest here: USNWR T10 is elite. #17 and #18 are not elite schools no matter how much their boosters wish they were.

Found the Northwestern alum

Northwestern <<< Dartmouth, Brown, Cornell, Columbia, Berkeley

USMA (West Point, Army)
USNA (Navy)
(and possibly the other academies but I'm unfamiliar with them)

NP and just want to say, now that my DC is going through the service academy application process, that I consider them elite schools, not because of SAT scores or other typical metrics discussed here, but in a general definition of the word "elite." There are so many ways to *not* make the cut at these academies, it's amazing that anyone can get in.

As I understand it:

In addition to SAT/ACT, academics and strong STEM interest/scores, they want proven athletes and like to see a Varsity letter or Team Captain. They also want proven leaders. Physically, you have to pass a test. You also have to be qualified medically, which involves not just your current physical/mental state, but everything that's ever happened to you since birth.

And for most of the academies, you need a nomination from your congressperson, state senators, or the VP or President, and they can only give out so many so there is a separate-competition for that as well.

Even if you get accepted, that acceptance can be pulled from you if you get hurt. Then the first day, you re-test that physical test, and get sent home if you don't pass it. Which is scary because you are past that May 1 deadline so your other college offers have expired. Then there is 3 months of basic training, and if you get hurt or can't finish, you're out. It's only after that, you are really "in."

It's enough to send a mom straight to the bottle of red...

Anonymous wrote:I have a pretty loose definition of elite. If it accepts less than 30% of its applicants, it is elite to me. I'd even give schools with 35% acceptance rate elite status.

That’s easily managed through more applicants from constant marketing, fee-waived applications and/or on rolling basis.
