Um Berkeley and ucla are extremely strong and known for humanities/soc. sciences. They being said, they are huge so I would also recommend rice as price is so good. If you want to stay in ca then visit both as vibes are different.

I have a HS freshman with ADHD and ASD. GMU is one of her first choices. It has *excellent* services for ADHD (and ASD), and is easy on the wallet. Not sure about the other colleges listed.

But visit before choosing. Most people know within a day whether they vibe with the school or not.

I'd pick Rice. It's best known for STEM, but it's solid in social sciences and humanities. It also has a residential college system, which I think is great, especially if the kid is introverted.

How certain are they about marine or environmental science and do they need to save money for grad school? If they are certain and money isn’t a factor, I would probably pick Cal Berkeley.

I don’t think it’s an odd list all. Just because they are more well known for STEM doesn’t mean they’re not also strong in humanities/social science. STEM just seems to take precedence in most people’s minds. But these are all excellent schools for humanities as well.

I agree w picking Rice for a shy kid though simply because it’s a smaller, probably more nurturing environment.

For me, BC. I like everything about Jesuit colleges more. But that's a pretty big money difference

Agree with BC. ND a bit higher ranked and my kid had this same choice and went with BC because of location primarily can't beat Boston and the Jesuit philosophy is just really special. That said two great choices. BC may be a bit more because more expensive location?

sticker price is about the same, but got merit money from ND.

How much are you prepared to pay? I think the Park Scholar is the way to go. Prestigous scholarships like that come with extra support and opportunities that may be more challenging to find in other environments. That set of majors pays decent but does not command Wall Street level salaries so not having student loans and the abiiity to pursue grad school is appealing.
(I say this as someone who was an environmental engineering major, got into some of the same schools, and went with the one who gave me the most money. No regrets.)
