As the map shows it is not your imagination. In fact the majority of the airplanes fly much closer to palisades and Bethesda than the map shows because of the early turn. The change was spearheaded by Potomac residents on the working group supported by Montgomery county office of the county executive.

It shows how the flight path changed at the request from the MoCo reps on the Working Group. It may not look like much but it greatly increased the noise for those communities. Departures are noisy.
