W&L has very drunk parents at basement frat parties on parent's weekend.

W&L is the definition of a bubble for very well off, private school southern preppies. It's like being on another planet (or the most elite version of a junior country club). Be warned if you are not from this world, it's a tough 4 years. Also need to have floppy hair, like searsucker and elephants. The study abroad trips are also out of control....sometimes literally, know a kid who was airlifted by private medical helicopter...

Yes. W&L has stronger academics.

Why would you say that? The difference in rankings isn’t significant anymore.

Richmond is in a residential area of a larger city. W&L is in a small city.

Yes

Today’s US News rankings have very little to do with academics and a lot to do with diversity and social justice. Whenever you’re looking at a ranking system, you should do some research and look at what factors are used to come up with the rankings.

Are you suggesting UR is better for diversity and social justice?

No, they are not saying that at all since UR is ranked below W&L by USNWR in best liberal arts colleges

Not sure that is a correct statement. W&L still ranks over Richmond. https://www.usnews.com/best-colleges/rankings/national-liberal-arts-colleges?myCollege=national-liberal-arts-colleges&_sort=myCollege&_sortDirection=asc

It was the same at a private high school my kids attended too. No idea why any adult thinks that official peer judgment is a good idea in today’s world. Kids are anxious and depressed over feeling constantly judged already. May as well just hand them a rope or a gun.

Doesn't UVA do the same thing?

Yes and it's a huge problem there too.

Cheating isn't really addressed at UVA.

False. The student-run honor committe and judicial court is a very big thing at UVA.https://honor.virginia.edu/

False. All over UVA reddit and all over the minds of many parents of UVA students who are angry about curves being slanted because of dishonest people.

Not true at all

Their CDS shows there are only 33% enrollees submit scores. This is a minor concern to me.

Is Richmond woke? I never thought of it that way, but things can change and I don't know anyone who's attended recently.

I don’t think US news rankings take woke into consideration per se. I think the reference to social justice comes from the fact that US News takes the number of Pell grant recipients in the student body and the graduation rate of those Pell grant recipients into account when calculating rankings.

What are other top SLAC’s doing for Pell students that W&L isn’t?

W&L is doing a lot, all schools are now that it is part of the ranking. At the same time, the Pell grant measurements were added to the rankings, things like class size were taken out. Both really hurt Washington and Lee, which is known for having really small classes and never had a large low income population.

The revision of the rankings resulted in a lot of movement in the rankings and has resulted in some unusual pairings (for example GW and Villanova now rank very close to each other despite the fact that Villanova has a much lower acceptance rate, much higher SATs, GPAs, etc. GW has more Pell grant recipients though).

In recent years, a school’s movement up or down the rankings often has less to do with improvements or decreases in the quality of education provided, but rather a change in the rankings. The new rankings are perfectly valid and helpful to those who want to go to school with low income students and/or you are a low income student yourself. However, if as a parent or student you have different priorities, you should probably find the ranking system that most closely mirrors your priorities.
