Please. If you offer EA, and a student works hard to complete that application, they deserve to have it read.

If they don't read it in time, they should defer and refund the application fee.

Agreed. Get the application in as early as possible. Admissions denies it, but they are always overwhelmed by the sheer number of applications.

DC submitted everything by early October last year. Was deferred in EA in late January 2021. He submitted a LOCI letter committing to attend UM, quoting "Hail to Victors" and the school motto. He got in 2 weeks later.

He's now applying to be an admissions tour guide at U-M. Go Blue!*


*This is the preferred closing salutation for every communication with this university.

My child applied EA last year (4.6/3.81, 35 ACT, tons of leadership, ECs and a varsity sport). Differed at the end of Jan, wait listed at the reg decision date. At that point she decided if they didn't want her, she didn't want them and moved on.

If it is truly your child's top choice, get the application in ASAP, because their best chance is to get it in early.

My kid got his acceptance Jan 29. They seemed to release decisions in waves.

High-stats student, “hook” I suppose is a difficult language learned from heritage weekend school without having any said heritage. Kid had a part-time fast food job through the pandemic, good ECs, and some weird yet intriguing essays.

COVID changed the volume of applications. Perhaps it will return to normal this year, but I doubt it.

Unless your family situation has recently changed (e.g. grandma donated a building with your child’s name on it) you will have to wait along with the rest of the plebeians.

A portion will hear before the end of December, but the last two years, they had something like over 70,000 applications to process, so the volume is simply a matter of staff time to wade through it all.

A lot of the EAs were simply deferred and then every few weeks, there were waves of releases - either admission, defereal or rejection.

In the summer of 2020, it went into early August. It was probably about the same this past cycle.

Check college confidential thread from last year.

The U Mich website advises that applicants who apply early will receive notification "no later than" late January. But do the decisions all come out the same date? Or do applicants who apply EA ever hear in January?
