Honestly, get as much information as you can about both in terms of community, rigor, learning resources, extracurriculars, commute time, and then pick the one YOU like better. College placement and prestige are irrelevant if you pick a school where you don’t thrive.

Potomac should be your first choice with Flint Hill as your safety.
Makes sense in terms of admissions throughout...history. But go visit both.

Potomac's campus is stunning. They use the wooded area and recently built, incredible, sports complex. The Lower School is wonderful. We really like the fact that there are four divisions so they separate out the 7th and 8th graders and focus in the Intermediate school on their diverse needs. Their alumni (like many schools in the DMV) are an impressive lot and they often come back to speak. While it is rigorous, my three children of varying abilities all find it manageable. The most rigorous is the Upper School but there is a lot of support. I understand that FH has fantastic learning support resources, probably better than Potomac. People can be critical of the Potomac parent body but we have found it to be welcoming and inclusive. Our one graduate had her choice of colleges but we were never striving for a highly selective college. She left Potomac feeling incredibly well-prepared for college - academically and socially. Our other two lifers are making their way through with joy and a level of involvement that makes it worth the cost.

Not comparable academically or prestige-wise in anyone’s book who knows the DMV private schools world. FH is not a top tier school. Potomac is. Ask any college admissions office.

Potomac is all rigor competing against a class of students with similar academic abilities so the pressure is high. Flint Hill can be as rigorous or not as you want it to be with a more homogenous mixing of student abilities. I found the parent and administrative communities to be open at FH compared to Potomac

Depends on what you want. They are both wealthy, suburban private schools with similar price tags. Potomac has a bit more “prestige” than FHS, but I don’t know if it offers a better education or not. Potomac probably has better college placement in general, but FHS has a world class robotics team. I would reach out to the schools are try to find parents that have sent their kids there to get their feedback. This is not a good forum for high value research.
