It's absolutely fine. Some kids go into the military first and then go to college. i've actually seen this be beneficial to those who waited and matured more. They get better grades, they stay out of trouble, and they really gain a lot out of their education. --A professor

I started college at 28. My father died when I was a teenager and my family didn't have money to send me to school, so I worked for ten years after high school. At the time there weren't very many of us and they called us "non-traditional students." I was in classes with much younger students, but I was able to make friends with a lot of grad students who were closer to my age. I appreciated my education a lot more than I would have as an 18 year old, and I had a good experience with the education I got and the friends I made.

Today I think it's no big deal - especially a 20 year old!

We had a guy in our dorm Freshman year who was 20 because he'd finished his South Korean military service. Nice guy. We also had someone who was 19 but turned 20 because she'd deferred a year and did charity work in Haiti.

In this day and age, no.

My freshmen will be 19 this fall (entered K at MCPS on time). If he had deferred / taken a gap year due to Covid, he would be 20 in a month.

It’s not weird. I went to a well regarded school amd we had a decent number of slightly older kids—especially since we had a lot of athletes who did an year or two off (especially common in hockey), international students etc

Non-traditional by senior year? -yes. Weird? - no. Some youngest-born guys with older sisters even have a thing for older women. It could also be a better experience as there may be less cattiness/hazing violence to deal with. Go for it!

No. Their fellow freshman may seem more immature or not, depending on the 20 year old.

I wouldn't say it's weird. It's just not the norm.

A 20 year old freshman will be beloved bc they will soon be turning 21. I think these pandemic days there's a wider range of ages due to deferrals, so it's less weird now than it might have been in 2019.
