Agreed. To get through this stretch of a few months until your new second car is ready, I would use a combo of mostly Uber/Lyft with the occasional Zipcar once or twice if you truly need a second car for an entire half or full day. Zipcar's rates are fairly high but they do include fuel. Be aware that advanced planning will be needed and sometimes the cars are a bit dirty or smell slightly but hey this is a temp solution for you.

Traditional rentals are super expensive now and they often book up in advance. Traditional rental cars are also still a huge pain...the old Seinfeld episode is still an accurate reflection today as your "reservation" does not guarantee a car. If you get unlucky you can show up and they are out of cars despite you having a reservation. And it takes a bunch of time to get to the rental car place, wait in line, go through the agent typing up an essay on the computer, declining insurance, waiting for the car to be fetched...it's just an awful experience.

we have 2 cars. One is now unworkable. We are planning to buy a car but it will be delayed until the end of this year. We only need a second car for the weekends. Ideas on best way to go about this? Rental? zipcar? I wasn't sure what would be most economical for the weekends. Thank you
