You don’t have to, but it’s a good feature, and one selling point for me while I was looking to buy a device. Location sharing can be turned on and off from the watch and can only be allowed to some people in the contacts, i. e mom and dad. If you are worried about privacy you can control who shares the location.

Gizmo watch is a cheaper version with similar functionality. My kid’s friend has it.

My son got a watch in 2nd grade with cellular $10/month, cost of watch was about $350 (I think).

It is very useful if you want to give your child some independence. He bikes to and from school on his own, a 10 min ride each way. He can go to the park on his own, same if he wants to stay with his friends after school. Easy to just check his whereabouts on my phone or call each other if we need to.

I got the smallest model because it’s more comfortable and less obtrusive. It needs to be charged overnight and has got some scratches on the screen (I don’t care, he doesn’t either). Overall it was worth it, definitely recommend it, if you don’t want a phone for your kid.

It’s a miracle all of us made it past 6th grade without a $350 watch that our parents would use to track us.

You do not need a phone with the watch. If you think you do, you have set it up wrong. My DD uses the watch without a phone.

Depends on your kid. My son is the same age and would definitely abuse it and most likely lose it. Good idea in theory tho.

Only on DCUM would parents buy an expensive and relatively useless gadget for their kids and then complain they need to remind their kids to use it.

My 6th grader wears it without complaint, but she would often forget it if we didn't remind her.

Anyone with experience with having their 6th grader wear an Apple Watch? I don’t want to get him a phone until 7th grade and he doesn’t like to wear the Gizmo. Does your child wear the Apple Watch or do they complain about it too?
