I wouldn't criticize anyone for doing this if they didn't have the money for a certified tutor, but please realize that to get certified you get quite a bit of training. In addition to two MEds I also spent an entire summer tutoring with Wilson with a Wilson trainer who observed frequently and gave feedback and led many sessions for training. It was an arduous process to get certified and I can't imagine that just ordering the materials and giving it a go would yield the same deep understanding that I have, for most people.

A public school would probably never let a tutor come in. You may be able to find a private though, if that’s a possibility for you.

The ASDEC program is pretty amazing, especially for severe dyslexia. Schools may let you miss a "special." Ask to talk the tutors close to your house/school and see what you can work out.


Thanks, OP here. I did talk to ASDEC but they said that MCPS usually doesn’t let their tutors in the schools, which is really disappointing! They let volunteers in schools usually so I don’t get it.

OG tutor here. The process you have to go through to get put on their official list is arduous, and frankly, not worth it. I can get a full schedule of clients without being listed. It’s all word of mouth among parents, and some educational consultants, and some professionals who do psycho educational testing.
I charge $110/hr.

Maybe ask to be on waitlist if anyone becomes available after school hours. They are an incredibly small organization and are probably overwhelmed with the number of people looking for tutors. Most of their tutors are in Rockville and it may be beneficial to try to wait for one, especially if they can do in person.


Thanks, this is extremely helpful! I will ask about getting on a waitlist for after school hours. Yeah I was a little surprised at the short response and lack of details about how it worked. Maybe I can still get in somehow.

My 8-year-old was just diagnosed with dyslexia and ADHD. We are getting the ball rolling on the IEP but also need to supplement with a private Orton Gillingham tutor. I emailed the OG Academy and they sent me a list of certified tutors in Maryland but the list was surprisingly not long and there were only 1-2 listed in Montgomery County which seems crazy. I found two local tutoring places that have OG experts but they’re only doing virtual right now. My son really can’t do that- needs to be in person.

Can anyone help with recs? We are in Rockville.
