I think I would be OK with this - but I'd be curious what they do with a positive case. If all kids are tested on Monday and on Wednesday 1 kid from a class tests positive, does that one kid quarantine, or does the entire class? Seems like it should be just the one kid, since they were all tested at the same time.

I feel completely differently--I've been trying to encourage our children's prek to start surveillance testing! Since so many kids are asymptomatic, surveillance testing can be super useful in preventing spread. It seems especially useful since in preschool the kids are often unmasked for naps and meals. Our friend's son tested positive through surveillance testing at camp although he was asymptomatic, and then was quarantined as a result. Without the surveillance testing, he would have continued attending and potentially infected other kids.

You do realize we're going to have to move on with our lives at somr point, right? Covid isn't going anywhere, even when the pediatric vaccines come.

We are moving on with our lives. Our lives in a pandemic with unvaccinated children in prolonged indoor daily contact correctly includes regular COVID testing.

But can we stop testing once they can be vaccinated? The problem is that vaccines for under 5 are a ways off, if it ever comes. Even if/when it dies, vaccinated can still spread covid like you say. Do we test for covid for here on out?

Maybe because I don't want my infant to get a qtip up his nose every week?
I would rather them require all capable family members (those living in the same household as the child) and staff provide proof of vaccination. Or is this no big deal?

Good. Not testing is for one reason — not to find cases.

Lol me too and I would not be ok with that.

They are probably spit tests. So not invasive.

Done by daycare staff! That’s a huge licensing no no.

I guess it depends on what they do with it. I don't have a problem with tests- I have a problem with quarantines. If they only quarantine kids that test positive, then sure.

I find the discomfort of the test varies wildly depending on how deep they go. I once had to self-administer a Covid test on myself but the person instructing me kept telling me do go deeper and it was extremely uncomfortable. I've taken DD who is now 2.5 several times at Kaiser and sometimes they are pretty gentle, but this most recent time it looked awful. I felt terrible. I really don't think the daycare teachers will take the deep approach though.

It's truly no big deal and it gives some peace of mind to the community that on a weekly basis, individuals with asymptomatic or symptomatic covid can be identified and isolated. I'm really glad my kid's schools are doing it. Just one more layer of protection with masks, distancing, ventilation etc.

My small kids have had no problem with the swab up their nose once a week and just shrug and move on with their day. But I do think that depends on your attitude about it. If they (even as infants) sense that you are upset about it, they may not respond well. Like anything else in life--they follow your lead. So, if you want to remain in this daycare, this is what your family needs to do. Try to communicate that in a positive way to your baby and you'll see it's a non-issue with the benefit of potentially saving your family from exposure to infected individuals.
