It's been interesting to read the news about Ford shifting towards a custom ordering model. In retrospect, it is shocking how they used to operate by packing dealer lots with an abundance of inventory and constantly tossing out mega discount incentives just to move the metal. Just two years ago it was not uncommon to get $10k off the MSRP of a high spec F150.
I agree that the days of mega discounts will never return as these companies realized under the right conditions (more custom ordering and fewer vehicles sitting on the lot) people are willing to pay ~MSRP. In 2022 and beyond, the only mega discounts will be on complete dud models that nobody wants.

I wonder why people do this. It's like the fancy purse people, putting deposits on the new fancy purse that's only going to be made in a thousand replicas and "building relationships" with the store people.
If you want that particular one, you're out of luck. If you need a large truck now, get the second-best one on your list.

+1, I would never buy a first generation ford. They have had a really rough time lately with initial production runs

That's understandable. But the reality is, you're looking at a red hot brand new model that is going to have extreme supply/demand imbalance. So your options are rather straightforward:
1. Work with your dealer and be prepared to pay up -- likely at a markup over MSRP and potentially a major markup. Also, be prepared to be flexible with delivery timing and expect it to be pushed back to some degree (see: what is happening with Bronco orders right now)
2. Buy a different truck (though all trucks are in high demand right now and will be for the foreseeable future)
3. Wait it out (and it's going to be a good 1.5 to 2 years before you'll be able to just snatch an F150 Lightning without markups.

Sure, but by that point, the chip shortage should be resolved and other supply chain issues should be vastly improved. It's also not a bad thing to buy later on in the production cycle once all the kinks are worked out.

The chip shortage is still working its way through the supply lines. One thing I saw with the Lighting is the range. The 300 mile range is for a full load in the bed. With out the load the range is close to 400-450. Looks like a cool truck.

Are you a long term Ford customer or have a long term relationship with the dealer? With this much demand only money talks and you pay above MSRP. I’ve been following along another personal favorite car and to get one of the slots, you need to pay $10s of thousands above MSRP to build that relationship.

I registered with Ford and put down the $100 deposit, but it turns out that so did 120,000 other people and they are only going to make 15,000 in 2022. Given the demand, Ford recently announced it would double production in coming years. But any tips on making sure I'm one of the first 15,000 people in line? Should I go talk to a dealer?
