2 kids: captain chairs. We have 3 so we went for row. If you are stopping at two, I’d do the former.

2 kids, go with captains in 2nd row and bench in 3rd row. maximizes carpool capacity while also maximizing kid comfort on longer rides (plus no fighting over the middle area of the bench seat).

With 3 kids I might opt for the bench seat on the second row so you can still have the full trunk available when the whole family is in the car.

For the record, we love our Subaru Ascent with captains chairs in the second row, bench in the 3rd row.

2 kids, captain chairs. 3+ kids, bench unless you want the oldest child on the last row.

I remember seeing a bench seat that the middle section folded down for easier access. If you ever need the extra seat, it’s there.

Captains if you plan to keep the third row in use. Bench if you don’t.

We like our bench because we can fit three across. We almost never put up the third row. If we did, I’d want captain for access.

Captains chairs!! We currently have a bench and it's a huge pain to access the 3rd row. Our next SUV will definitely have captains chairs.

Having had both, captains chairs all the way. Easier to get to the third row and more comfortable, as the kids get older or as adults need to sit in them. You can adjust legroom individually.

+1 for captain’s. I have 2 kids in car seats and one in a booster. The oldest can slide by siblings in the second row and buckle himself in the back. Our previous vehicle had bench seats in the second row, and with two car seats installed we had to go through the trunk to get to the back.

We prefer captains chairs. It's just so much easier to access the third row. Once you install car seats you can't just flip the middle seats forward to access the third row - so being able to slide in and past them is ideal. Even when your kid graduates to a booster it is annoying to flip the bench seat forward.
