I turn them inside out and wash in machine on gentle cycle. Hang dry.

Ha! I do that too! Seriously, at least every 6 months. I should meet your friend.

We just did a PB lunchbox and it looks new now. The backpacks are made of the same material so what we did would work. Dilute oxyclean in a pail of water, dip a scrubby sponge or brush it, and scrub the surface of backpack or lunchbox, especially the straps. We were careful to not scrub the printed parts too roughly. Spray with hose to rinse and open up and let dry on a sunny day outdoors.

We use Force of Nature to disinfect

We’ve run Pottery Barn backpacks through the wash, came out fine (and spruced up). Probably used gentle cycle.

Maybe it is time for a nice new backpack?

The ones we bought in 2008 and 2012 were fine in the washer. After the first ran them thru about every 6 months or so. Can’t remember if I dried them or not; probably just hung outside.

I've put mine and the lunchbox too in the washing machine on cold gentle cycle.

Wash with a sponge and some dish soap, then rinse.

I washed a backpack in my machine on gentle years ago. It came out shredded. Now I wash backpacks by hand in the bathtub. I use a scrubby sponge on the harder areas.

You could wash them on gentle cycle abs drip dry them but I doubt it will help much. Dark colors are your friend as far as backpacks go.

My kids bags could use some sprucing up before school
starts on Monday.
