We use the Avanchy mini straw cup, baby has had no trouble with it from about 10M (it was also hilarious watching her learn to drink from a straw...) like others we use it for water only.

We did:
9-12 mo: sippy cup with spout / 360 cup
12-18 mo: Weighted straw cup and open training cup
18 mo on: regular straw cup and regular open cup
Letting your kid drink water from a sippy cup for a couple of months is not going to do any damage or cause any issues

Straw cup. We had to coach our oldest at eight months on how to use it but our youngest picked it up immediately at six months. We also use a tiny open cup but we have to hold it as she loves to dump it.

Seconding the 360.
Starting after a year you can work on open cups. I started by putting a small amount of water in the cup for practice. Worse case he got very slightly wet.

I just practice with a tiny open cup (I think my favorite is literally called tiny cup? Or something similar. It’s silicone) and use a 360 most of the time. I like the idea of straw cups but I don’t understand how to clean them. The 360s go right in the dishwasher easily.

Also just a reminder not to sweat it, OP. Your baby is getting all the fluids they need from breastmilk or formula right now. So yes keep offering an open cup or a straw cup for practice, but don’t worry about it at all. They have plenty of time to get the hang of it before they really start needing any significant amount of water.

This. We did Munchkin Weighted Straw cup to introduce water. It is a strictly water cup in our house. Oxo Tot straw cups we use for milk, and it does require a more difficult suck motion to use. The Munchkin cup gets pressurized and starts pushing liquids out the straw in certain environments, which is why we only use it for water, but it's great for learning.
PP here and haha we use the oxo tot cup for milk too- it’s really the best straw cup for preventing leaking!

Subject: Alternatives to sippy cup for 9 month old
I read that sippy cups can cause issues- how are people introducing water to 9 month old baby besides an open cup? It’s a huge mess with an open cup- do I just stick with it and hope he has the hang of it or are there in between cups that don’t cause the same problems but that are less messy than an open cup? Baby doesn’t take bottles.
