Pack a cloth napkin as a placemat.

Our kid brought a towel in to sit on. Only change.

+1 Seriously folks, if eating outside is going to cause kids to rough it out, then I fear this generation will not have enough grit to survive as adults.

I totally agree! Have your kids never been on a picnic, eaten at a park, gone to camp or camping? APS is asking all kids to bring a towel or yoga mat so they can sit and have room. But really, cant they eat directly out of the lunchbox? Do you pack a five course meal? Goodness gracious.

The one thing my K ran into last year sitting outside, is that occasionally it would be windy enough that pollen and leaves would fall into her lunch from nearby trees. So then she would refuse to eat it and just ate the packaged rice krispy treat. Quite convenient at times, haha.

Use the lunch box as her placemate/plate. Sit on the ground and open it in front of her. Eat the food. Put everything back in. Pack an extra napkin or pack of wet wipes if you think she'll be messy. Have you ever had a picnic as a family?

Mine will have everything from a sandwich to leftovers, including soup. I expect probably some spillage but it's not a crisis.

This might be the lamest post of all time...if you can't figure this out, i think you are better off hibernating in your house until the end of time

I guess I'd suggest finding a place to sit, extracting, say, a sandwich from whatever containers the lunch, removing any ziplock bag or similar housing, if applicable, placing the food item in hand(s) (having been appropriately washed and/or sanitized), removing a mask, if applicable, and then, if safe, proceeding to eat said food item...

Lunch bags? I thought all kids got their lunch at school. Let's be honest, it's not great, but it's as good as anything most parents put in a bag

Or... land the helicopter. Your kid is 8, not a middle aged lady who can’t get up off of the floor.

My kid was in outdoor camp this summer and ate lunch outside, no picnic benches, no tents, just a patch of grass or dirt and if he felt like it a towel.

It never once occurred to me that he wouldn’t be able to figure it out.

My kids ate on the ground on their hybrid days in the spring and it never occurred to me to change their lunch. K and 2nd grade, neither reported any problem dropping their food on the ground. When they got school lunches, I think they be and on a little cardboard tray. We also sent them in with little towels to sit on the concrete or the dirt, but forgot them occasionally and it was not an issue. I guess if something fell on the ground they would dust it off an eat it? Tell your kid to sit cross cross applesauce and any dropped food will land in their lap.

I actually feel like there will be less spillage with the lunch on the ground vs a table.

We have not changed our lunch packing routine.

I'm curious to know how kids will be eating their lunches outdoors. DD is used to being at the cafeteria table, but with outdoor lunches, I reckon the kids will have to rough it out, without having a table to place their lunch bags, or even a bench to sit on? What're your thinking of packing for your student that's convenient? We have a granola bar on the side, in case our 8-year-old (who's naturally very clumsy) drops/spills her lunch on the ground.
