Yes--Maury is our next door neighbor and we've been advised by the other parents on the block that our chance of getting our son into pre-K there (without an older sibling) is verrrrry low.

L-T's real estate costs more on average than Maury's, because of how far east the Maury zone goes.


Maury is considered the better school but I prefer the walkability of LT. Stanton Park, union station, h street, union market.

Sorry, I missed that you are starting with K! Your inbound school will have to take you. There will be very few spots out of bounds and you shouldn't count on getting one. You can lottery for them and for charters and city-wide schools.

Yes, Maury was rezoned a couple of years ago and the catchment now goes further east. So you can find some properties in the east end of the zone that are cheaper (it's also a less desirable area than the west part of the zone or the LT zone, hence cheaper)

Brent, Maury and L-T are safe bets for in-bound schools. Everyone loves Peabody, but Watkins is more of a mixed bag. I personally know families happy at Tyler (especially the Spanish program) and Payne.

SWS is a beloved pure lottery school (the magnet description above is misleading; there's no magnet aspect in the traditional sense) run by DCPS that anyone in the city has an equal chance at (setting aside sibling preference); it is physically located on the Hill.

Brent, Maury and Ludlow Taylor are well regarded. I know a family that is happy at Tyler as well.

Just to clarify. School Within a School is not a charter. It is a magnet Reggio Emilia program within DCPS.

I think the best elementaries are Maury, Brent. I hear good things about Ludlow-Taylor, Van Ness and Payne. Some well regarded charter schools you have to lottery into: School Within a School, 2 Rivers. Look at myschooldc.org to get a look at all the schools.

We're moving to Capitol Hill and have a child that would start kindergarten in fall 2022. I'm looking for feedback on the public elementary schools in that neighborhood. Thank you!
