No such thing.

Exactly. You will quickly find that there are few safety nets in this country, especially for people with mental illness. Thank Reagan voters and everyone who followed.

Section 8? Food stamps? Heating and cooling assistance? All exist right here.

Section 8 prioritizes families, and for an elderly mentally ill white man, he will die before he gets housing.

Food stamps? Great just send them your current address. Heating assistance? Great tell us you’re utility provider. COOLING assistance? 99% that is not a thing (and I’m from Florida), all you get are cooling centers (ie fire hydrants and open homeless shelters).

He should have a VA pension maybe? Any social security? Assuming he gets maybe $500/month, he should be able to rent a room in a group house somewhere, though maybe that is no longer a thing after Airbnb.

But under no circumstances let him live with you.

Huh, so cooling assistance does exist now, what do you know.

This. They have a homeless residential program, some addiction programs too.

I'd have a really hard time with that -- COVID for one. Smoking the next -- and the gambling is going to bring a whole host of issues particularly possible danger to your family?

If he wants to help his father, your Dh needs to find a furnished room/temporary lodging and pay for a month in advance.

During that time, DH needs to contact social services and find out what resources are available (Medicaid, housing vouchers, etc."

Call the VA and ask for a social worker.

This page has information on homelessness programs for veterans. Perhaps there’s something there that will help?

Get him on state aid and a list for state (usually city) low-income housing.

Also if the 4th wife kicked him out, he should at least be entitled to part of the house. Assuming it isn't a rental.

You pay the bills (rent, food, medical), if you choose to do so, not him directly.

His fourth wife has kicked him out.
He is penniless.
He called DH and asked to live with us.
DH has lent him money before.

FIL has odd delusional beliefs, won't get a covid vaxxine, chain smokes and has a gambling addiction.

We do not have the space, aside from his worrisome issues. But what do we do? He could literally be homeless. He is a veteran. Does a veterans home have the obligation to take him? he has spent time in a psych hospital but was discharged.
