APS should be providing infrastructure improvements to their schools. Parents buying them is a slippery slope to PTAs just buying everything. And that's not equitable since we have some schools in our districts where most students are free and reduced lunch.

+1 Instead of buying it for your child's classroom, find out if all the classes have them and lobby the school board.

Actually they don't. Turns out the ones that APS bought actually are NOT HEPA filters. The manufacturer misled a lot of people who bought them and now there are lawsuits against it for false and misleading claims.

Do you have a source for that information? I have searched and found no such lawsuit. The air purifiers in my school are HEPA maid by blueair. https://www.blueair.com/us/blueair-performance.html

Also interested in the source for this?

Not PP, but I don't think there actually is a lawsuit against BlueAir, but I think there are against some other companies. So I think PP is wrong on that part (unless they want to weigh in) but they are right that BlueAir are not true HEPAs like they should have gotten.

We’ve had air cleaners in our house for many years due to allergies and asthma. The Blue Air are good ones but, like any air cleaner, need to be maintained. This means replacing filters and/or cleaning as recommended by the manufacturer. Will your gift be maintained or just be a dust collector after a few months?

Just like the crappy headphones they bought for the title one schools that don’t even work. What a waste of money.

NP: Blue Air purifiers are not "True HEPAs", as recommended by true air quality experts like Richard Corsi. They also are ionizers which emit harmful particles into the air. The Illinois Institute of Technology Lab just tested the BlueAir 211, which APS bought, and confirmed that they are ionizers. Air quality experts have been pretty clear that people should buy true HEPAs and NOT anything with an ionizer. It's not the end of the world, as I guess they're better than nothing, but they're not as great as APS is making them seem and I've heard that APS is considering replacing them with true HEPAs.

My recommendation, based on recent and personal experience = offer to the teacher, with a succinct statement on the observed effectiveness (CDC had a great study July 2021). Optimally, they'll agree without asking permission from above. It's best to do this quietly; if you start cc:ing administrators you may be told 'no'.

Can I buy a HEPA filter purifier on amazon and donate it to my kid’s classroom? Is that allowed? Is that crazy? Id be happy to go in with other parents and buy multiples so each classroom could have 2-3.
