We did a map themed bedroom. And then my son decided he wanted a galaxy themed bedroom. Just keep it simple and have him pick a color, buy him a loft bed, and go to ikea and have him pick out a storage schema.

If you google boys map bedrooms lots of good examples come up.

Requirements:
Full-size bed, non-lofted
Needs a desk (has one now that is too small)

Interests:
World/U.S. history
camping/backpacking/hiking

Room is on the smaller side.

Not the most organized kid so any suggestions for keeping gear/school stuff organized would also be very welcome!

Does he have any other interests? Mine has aa small bedroom and we did a fun wall paper mural on one wall, LED Phillips Hue lights, etc.

I love our cb2 go desk with a monitor mounted on the wall, on an arm if you need it to turn. Wireless keyboard and mouse. It’s much nicer than sitting at a desk against a wall and you can roll it to be “stowed” as needed.

I think the “decor” elements should be up to him.

Does he actually use those drawers for clothes -- like getting dressed everyday? Wondering if that would be annoying to pull drawers out that you have to kneel down for. In theory, I think the idea is great.... but is it really practical?

My son has that kind of bed but also has a dresser for every day clothes. The big drawers under the bed have stuff like extra blankets, sports equipment, out-of-season clothing.

Same for my son. He picked this bed: https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/brimnes-bed-frame-with-storage-headboard-white-luroey-s29129601/

+ a long desk that wasn't very deep but had wide drawers. Similar to this one: https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/micke-desk-white-90214308/

For decor, he picked a navy blue for the walls, geometric orange/white bedding and decorated the walls with large maps of the world and U.S.

Next to the desk we put a Container Store elfa wire drawer unit that we already had and a large white board that he used to keep track of school work.

Houzz has lots of boy room ideas. You can narrow by color, theme, etc.

I recently redid my son's room and used the following for inspiration and product sources.

https://studio-mcgee.com/2019-7-13-the-sunday-7

Found a nice upholstered beige bed on walmart.com, scones at home depot. He does have built-in bookcases, so I would add a bookcase too, preferably one with cabinet doors on the bottom to contain some of the disorganized mess.

My son loves his room. Good luck!
