I mean, it’s Occam’s Razor. Toxicology reports will shown the husband poisoned the wife with something in the water, then the baby, dog, and himself.
There are easier ways to poison a family than to go on a hike and hope the spot of water you pick is toxic.
Besides which - poison is mostly a woman's choice of murder/suicide.

I googled algal blooms and sounds like they are pretty obvious (water changes colors and looks scummy), and no human deaths have ever been attributed to them. So that seems unlikely.
