Using the RAV4 Hybrid vs. RAV4 Prime as an example, the plug-in Prime would give you a performance advantage even if you never plugged it in. Since it, unlike the regular hybrid, is designed to be usable with the gas engine not running, the electric motors are more powerful. I assume they provide this power, along with the gas engine, for peak acceleration even if you never plug it in.

Lincoln Aviator. It’s pretty amazing.

We had the Volvo XC 90 and replaced it with Toyota Highlander. Never missed the XC 90; loved the Highlander.

Thank you so much for the responses. That makes sense. Our street parking set up makes setting up a plug in station at home difficult.

Yeah - you don't have to plug in. But you are paying a lot for a plug in hybrid that will go about 20 miles without gas. Personally, I love my plug-in hybrid because it gets me to work and back on a nightly charge, and I have not filled up gas in about 5 months, since I took my last long road trip.

That might actually work if I could plug it in at work every once in a while…

Yes but the weight penalty of the large batteries decreases your mpg if you don’t plug in.

Does anyone know if you can just never plug in a Volvo XC90 hybrid?

Kia Sorento hybrid - love it. Getting >40 mpg, mixed city/highway.

Any more thoughts?

If you considered a Highlander hybrid but bought something else with three row option, what’d you get?

Well you don'y have to plug it in, still gives you hybrid benefits. You'll pay more for it but likely still qualifies for a tax credit. And in DC you get some other tax break. I have a BMW X5 plug in that is similar but sadly no third row.
