When you got back at 2:30 and he hadn't started cleaning, that would've been the time to say, what does this mean for tonight's plans? And then figure out a new plan that might involve postponing the cleaning til tomorrow and prioritizing your date night.

This, 100%. I can’t imagine just sitting in a room stewing in disappointment - that’s how resentment builds. Next time, communicate and determine a new plan when things change.
