This is the free online public charter school. We did it last year and had a good experience, although the curriculum is demanding and it requires a lot of parental involvement depending on the grade.

The parental commitment is too much for a lot of parents. I personally could not imagine keeping my kids home again. Parents and old-enough kids are vaccinated. My kids would be so upset if I told them they couldn't go to school.

It also requires the kids to unenroll from APS, so no sports or clubs with their friends.

I would think that only elementary or sixth graders would think to do this, so few clubs or sports anyways. I can't imagine not sending a vaccinated kid unless you had a high risk family member or the kid themselves was high risk (like currently undergoing cancer treatment). If you have a medical need, they will let you transfer to the virtual program.

I confused the Virtual VA with the APS Covid virtual option. I assume I can reenroll in APS next year if we withdrew this year, and unfortunately given that it shut down midway through kindergarten, we never got to the point of joining clubs or sports. We’ve had to find private pay outdoor activities/sports instead.

This is the last thing I want to be doing right now but I don’t see how we come out without an exposure with cafeteria lunch and indoor PE, and after all this, a vaccine is so close.

This is OP. I’m coming around to the idea that this is what we will do. I can’t see risking this unmasked lunch and PE stuff in Delta times if a vaccine for them is so close. It’s really a hard decision because I so want DC in school. Im so sad at missing so much of fun school already.

8. I realized that I’m confusing virtual VA with APS’s virtual program option. I meant the APS virtual program— in case that matters. Yes, ideally, it would only be until the vaccine is approved—- hopefully soon. I just don’t understand how I’m locked into a decision made under vastly different conditions.

Separately, we love our APS school, but would a private be better with mitigation? The indoor unmasked lunch, crowds of kids, and even the filtration just makes me feel like going back to APS now is all but guaranteed Covid - hard to accept when we’ve sacrificed this long and it seems a vacccine is close for the under 12s. Ugh. Why is this happening…. Ugh.

Well you aren't getting into the APS virtual program or a private school at this point

DH is worried and I told him we could pay for k12 or something similar. He didn’t like when they were all virtual for so many reasons so they are going. Yes, it is stressful but online isn’t the answer for our family. They need to be in person.

Pretty sure it’s too late to do Virtual Virginia this year. Plus it’s there is not much synchronous and requires tons of paternal involvement.

The deadline to register for fall was July 15. The school district pays a fee per student to Virtual Virginia. You could try to see if you can still register for fall. DH and I have misgivings and have a loose plan thatif the school DCs attend have two outbreaks (not individual one and done cases), we will homeschool and find a virtual program with synchronous learning.

I’m worried about sending my unvaccinated child back in person, but I haven’t explored Virtual VA.

I am having serious misgivings about sending my kid back in person, which I picked way back when pre Delta. I know that Duran said we can’t switch, but I’m wondering if anyone has tried? Or is anyone else having misgivings about in person?
