Have they even put out the bus/walk zones yet this year? It may be different than last year (which had much bigger walk zones due to covid)

I posted this and yes, the walk zone goes up to 1.5 miles. Maybe not where you live? My kids are within a mile and walk to school, so it’s not an issue for us but it is a real issue for plenty of kids/families. What street is 1.5 miles? I have a friend on Lee Street and they are right at the border of the walk zone, and it's 1.1 miles. That's a 15 minute walk.

That's great for your friend! I'm not going to share specifics because I don't want to "out" anyone, but there are 100% families who don't get a bus and live between 1.1-1.5 miles from school in the neighborhoods south of Broad and no longer get a bus. Many of them.

If you want to avoid it all, drop them off at the entrance to the VA Tech parking lot. They can cut through and it’s a short walk to the school. Plenty of students and staff use that lot daily because it’s not expensive and closer to the high school than some of the lots. I think it is $3 or $4. It won’t cost you anything if you don’t pull in and drop off.

There is no reason middle or high schoolers can’t walk to MEH or Meridian if they don’t get serviced by a bus. It just isn’t that far and these kids could all use the exercise.

We live on the far end away from the school, and many kids bike to school instead of taking the bus. If you really feel a need to drop off you can do so blocks away from the school and they can walk the rest of the way. There are options that don't require parents to drop off at the school.

^this is for FCCPS. I think OP means Meridian, former George Mason. Marshall is the FCPS school down the road.

There is construction going on and they are working on areas that affect parking this week. Yes, have your kids take the bus and that will solve a lot of the traffic issues even without this. Do you really need to drop them off?

This is practically every school because of all the switches from buses to drop-offs. Depending on your particular school logistics, you're probably better off finding a nearby neighborhood and walking them in.

What is “Marshall/Meridian”?

They don’t have buses?

Our kids have been in camp at Marshall/Meridian this summer and the parking/walking situation is a full on disaster! I don't know how they're going to manage it. Get there EARLY and drop your kid off in the Giant parking lot so you can avoid the dumpster fire that is the parking lot/drop off area.
