She’s a nanny. Let her figure out how to manage the two kids. Why would have a nanny and then ask your mother to watch the baby?

I doubt you will find anyone willing to put up with grandma watching their every move!

OP, when is your older child starting preschool? If he hasn't started already, I would just be aware that he may very well be sick relatively frequently, and thus your nanny will have more responsibilities than expected. This happened to me - older DS was basically on and off sick with colds for a solid six months straight, and with COVID the preschool was especially strict about letting even kids with mild runny noses come in. For that reason, I would suggest a slightly larger pay increase (maybe $4/hr), as well as all of the additional duties that come along with having two kids in the house.

Either my mother (who lives locally) or I (extended maternity leave) could take care of the baby in the afternoon. Our nanny has a large network of nanny friends who have similar aged kids, and play dates for my older one would be more fun without the baby tagging along.

I was thinking 10% increase ($20–>$22). Does that sound reasonable? We are in the outer DMV burbs, not DC/Bethesda/McLean.

No. "5.00/, hr raise. If for no other reason putting up with you and your mother.

How do is the older child? They’re not napping anymore?

If grandma is reliable, it sounds good fogg fr part of the time, but I would suggest that your preschooler spend time with nanny and baby for part too, because otherwise your older child is going to become used to it always being one of the other, an you will eventually need to have both with the nanny.

It’s okay - not great. And are you sure grandma is going to be reliable?
