DC United had maybe 3 ID Sessions last early spring and then had some invite only sessions as well.

No, they are not. The owners underfund their professional team, and they underfund their academy/MLSNext team. They do not support their academy coaches. Serious kids go to Philadelphia Union or elsewhere, Moses Nyeman and Kevin Paredes notwithstanding. We deserve so much better in this area.
Serious kids used to go to PU or elsewhere. That's now very difficult given the MLS territory rules.

FYI - Serious kids can’t just go to Philadelphia or else where if they live within DC United boundaries.

The P2P clubs are Arlington, Loudoun, Pipeline, PPA and VDA. Kids from those clubs will get scouted and some will get invites to practise with the DCU Academy.
Obviously DCU plays the local MLS Next clubs: Alexandria, SYC, Achilles, Bethesda, Baltimore Armour so they will definitely see these kids as well.
They do also have tryouts - but that's a crapshoot if they do not already know the kid or his coach.
I think you can also e-mail the academy and link to some game film to see if you can get a tryout at any time.
It is possible to get there from a smaller club - but it doesn't happen often.
Alexandria has been P2P as well. Any MLS Next team will have tape that DCU academy can watch at U13 and 14, before DCU fields its youngest team at U15.
