If PP is trying to say FCC is not welcoming to conservatives, that's simply not true. There are many prominent conservative operatives and people associated with the old iteration of the Falls Church Episcopal (which split off from the main Episcopal church because the main Episcopal church was tolerant of gays and lesbians serving in leadership roles in the church). The high school has a very prominent Christian Youth Athlete (whatever that is officially called) organization that many of the "popular" kids are a part of.

I am a big time Democrat and have several friends here in FCC who are conservative. They're hardly pariahs; rather, they are well liked and prominent members of the community.

Now if you're talking about straight-up racists - no, they're not welcomed in FCC but I'm guessing they aren't in McLean, Arlington, Alexandria, or anywhere in Northern Virginia.

Each K class has a teacher and a full-time para, with students generally numbering 18-22. Two recesses a day, afternoon rest time, gym twice(?) a week, other specials mixed in. Each classroom has multiple stations/centers that the children rotate through; there is lots of time for play, and for learning through play. Teachers will assess students during the first two weeks; you’ll have a meeting scheduled with your child’s teacher to talk about concerns, areas of strength, etc. It’s a great way to set the tone for the year.

Class assignments will go out the week before school starts. In the Before Times, there was also a Meet the Teacher day. Not sure if that’s happening this year or no. All children ride the bus (and there’s an aide on each bus in addition to the driver); schedules and stops will be posted on the FCCPS transportation web page in the next couple weeks if they’re not up already. The routes don’t vary too much from year to year, so if you meet neighbors you can also ask them about the bus stop and timing.

Good luck settling in! Stop by the Cherry Hill park or TJ/Oak Street playground this weekend — you’ll find loads of parents who will be glad to share info and help you get oriented.

Hate to be the naysayer, but as a current Mount Daniel parent I’d warn OP to manage expectations in COVID times and keep in mind that some of the details pps are reminiscing about probably won’t be the same this year.

Well, sure. It almost goes without saying that there will be Covid-related adjustments to the schedule and physical plant. But it seemed that the OP was asking about the overall mission and vibe of the school. Are you saying that’s noticeably changed as well? Do you think that’s temporary and Covid-related, or more of a long-term sea change?

We were new to the school last year so I can’t speak to the actual degree that it’s changed but from our short experience I definitely wouldn’t describe it as particularly warm/welcoming/whimsical? and easy to meet people like the pps described. I’m hopeful that this year will be better than last but doubtful that it will be near the idyllic situation that pps seem to remember. I’d also be prepared for potentially larger than normal kindergarten classes given the atypical number of redshirts.

As a former FCC resident, I would say it's only welcoming and idyllic to *some* people.

You don't have to be coy about the people that will be welcomed. Just compare the presidential election results (https://results.elections.virginia.gov/vaelections/2020%20November%20General/Site/Locality/FALLS_CHURCH_CITY/Index.html) with this thread (https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/975980.page).

OP - hopefully you got your KG kid's teacher assignment emailed to you today. There is the Thursday virtual meet the teacher that you'll be emailed about soon probably by the teacher. Also highly recommend the KG playdate at Cherry Hill Park on Friday morning that was posted above.

Welcome and hope you have a great experience!

I have a kid starting 2nd and K this year and I would definitely describe MD as warm, welcoming and whimsical the year before Covid. Last year was Covid though so sure it wasn't easy to meet people because we were all stuck at home and everything was virtual. There will be the K playdate next week (and they are doing it for the 1st grade families as well - definitely plan to attend that!) FCC Parks & Rec also announced today that there will be Farm Day and Taste of Falls Church in person this year and those types of events are awesome for the kids and for bumping into friends. I'd also recommend frequenting the farmer's market and parks and you will start to get to know people. Soccer is a great suggestion too.

Regarding size, the MD principal told me recently that the class sizes aren't any larger than in previous years. We also were concerned about that but it's not coming to fruition. I think enough went to private or moved to even out the numbers.

Falls Church City is a very welcoming community and Mt. Daniel is a lovely school. Each class has about 18 kids and 2 teachers in it. Your child will make friends in no time and you will meet other parents and adults through the school.

We have also met tons of people through youth sports here -- I highly recommend your child sign up for Falls Church Rec soccer if there is any interest at all there - soccer in K/1st grade is co-ed and very, very laid back. It will give you a good chance to meet other parents on the sidelines and your child to meet kids outside of his/her class as well.

If you're on Facebook, there are two falls church parents groups that you can join. I've seen people talking about rising kindergartners on there.

According to a recent communication from Mount Daniel: class assignments will be sent out on or around August 23rd and a kindergarten playdate is scheduled for August 27 (though I’d be prepared for this to potentially be canceled due to Covid precautions).

The school registrar Nora Phishner is usually responsive if you contact her to get added to the relevant distros.

Family recently relocated to Falls Church, and we haven't made many parent friends in the area who have kids going to school quite yet. My 5 year old (oldest child) is starting at Mount Daniel and we know nothing about the school. When do we find out what teacher she will be with and if there are any playground playdates??

We moved too late to do any kind of Kindergarten assessment, will that affect my child's placement in classrooms? How is the Kindergarten structured? is it more play based or academic focused? Honestly just looking for re-assuring as we've gone through a massive transition with moving and now to a new school.
