Anyone else get to the season finale tonight?
What did you think? I thought it was inspired and that a season 3 looked likely.

This! I find it nearly incoherent, but it does re-create 1930's Los Angeles beautifully with the sets and costumes and the noir lighting.

Still, the title a bit weird since Perry Mason was a criminal defense lawyer, not a private eye. That was Paul Drake.

He becomes one towards the end of season 1. It’s like Batman the beginning

Okay so I'll concede that it doesn't quite have the urgency of season 1 yet, or the noir of it either. Something huge will go wrong and it will all speed up, at some point I'm sure.

I watched season 1 and got hooked. I have read the books like 30 years ago and don’t remember much- watched the old show and I like that this one is much deeper than “a cool detective saves damsel in distress”. Too much gay/anti racist/girl power stuff for my liking but no one can deny that it’s true for the time

Nah I think the plots are always slow burn for a good while and then they really ramp up. It's terrific.

I just watched this whole series and it was fantastic. Any other series that are this good? I watched it after someone recommended it gets. I hope there will be a season 2.

According to Amazon reviews--yes, a lot, plus violence of course. And much profanity.

I did know about this version of Perry Mason and so looked it up. A number of reviewers said it was far more like a new version of Chinatown and had little resemblance to the Erle Stanley Gardner books and even less to the television show.

Anyone else watching this? I find Matthew Rhys absolutely mesmerizing. The writing is ok, if a bit uneven here and there, but I’m into the storyline and the vibe. The religious storyline with Sister is different and intriguing. For some reason it makes me think of Nathaniel West (LA, mob delusion, dreams and darkness, violence). The gritty, sometimes downbeat feel and the colors set a compelling, unsettling tone. Seeing Perry’s back story is fun (even if it doesn’t feel realistic). In short, I think it’s very good!

Bonus: Perry would be a great baby name, or at least nickname!
