Landscaper here. The debris left from stump grinding is not a ‘healthy’ addition to your garden and its not useable as mulch near anything living (I suppose you could use for a path.) while I can work around stumps I remove this debris if I’m putting in a new landscape.

The grinders have always taken all the wood chips away.

Who did you use?

I used JL Tree Services.

How much of the tree stump was left above ground?

If you had the stump ground, it should be zero. Just wood chips.

Nothing. There was actually a hole left that we had to fill.

When I've had the stumps ground, you couldn't tell anything had been there. It was at least level with the ground, possibly a little below grade. Mostly, I just leave them cut. They're maybe 2-3" above grade.

They can take the chips away, but if you ask, they can also leave it. We have the property for it, so I generally ask them to leave all the wood and mulch. Saves $, good for the soil and wildlife.

We used Bartlett Trees. I highly recommend them. Our stump is less than a foot tall, and the tree was massive. I just threw some perennial seeds on top. Looks

Just let the grindings rot somewhere, then use as mulch.

It was an extra charge with our tree company for the removal of the stump grindings. We had a a huge tree removed, so it was worthwhile to have the mess from the grindings removed. A friend kept the grindings for mulch.

Who did you use and what was the charge, if you remember? The place I scheduled said they would leave them and would grind the stump
Leaving 4-6” left. That seems like a massive mess.

When they grind the stumps, how much was left? What did they do with the wood chips?
