No surprise at all - all the camps are a little sketchy this summer. They waited too long to decide to open so they had a hard time finding counselors, much less good ones.

My DC is a counselor this summer and reports back on the strange other counselors - lots of people with mental issues (nothing violent), lack of outdoor skills, not very good with children, revolving kitchen staff. Many have quit and been replaced over the course of the summer, but they are short staffed. Not to the extreme of the camp in the article, but not the pre-2020 experience.

many camps had staffing troubles this year. The competent ones reduced or cancelled programming to not overextended themselves.

I'm certain that there were red flags before this. They were clearly not paying their staff enough if 15 counselors just didn't show up. I say this because of all the camps my kids and their friends attend, no others had this staffing problem.

I don't mean to scare anyone, and this is just a camp blip. This was an interesting read on camps dealing with summer in a pandemic. I read this on people.com this AM about a sleep away camp in New Hampshire having difficulties hiring counsellor and dealing with food shortages. I hope this camp can make a comeback.....
