St. Johns also has strong Stem since Kimsey, founder of AOL, went there and donated a ton of money. (Kimsey Science and Technology Center, designed in consultation with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute)

and of course good athletics (thank to Plank, founder of Under Armour, who attended STJ), but might be too competitive, depending on your kids sport/level of play.

You could pick a school with a great team for a sport and they are so competitive you kid gets cut Freshman year, just something to think about.

+1 for St. Andrew's ... consistently strong lacrosse and basketball teams (and often soccer). Has been a good fit for our academically-strong but athletically-minded son.

I keep reading the refrain that the odds are longer coming from public, and I’m curious why that is the perception. DS applied to private into 9th this past year and had good acceptances. He got into 3 of his top 4 choices. Not an athlete or magical ECs. Good grades and test scores.

I don't anything about St Andrews, but the others are the last schools I would recommend for a strong athlete who prefers sports over academics.

OP, look at Bullis. Strong sports, strong and growing stem, range of academics.

None of the schools listed by the PP are for the very athletic.

apply everywhere--all the top schools will have a program that offers strong academics, sports and the arts.

I had a similar son and applied to potomac, sidwell, maret, gds and STA. My son was accepted to 3/5 this year for 9th. We were coming from public. At the school he's attending, he will be one of 3 kids joining from public for 9th grade. I.e. the odds are very LONG from public at most of these schools.
And we are full pay. It's harder if you want aid.

Apply in 7th and apply again in 9th and see what happens.

Potomac and he takes the bus(it’s required)

Extroverted, social kid who likes to be busy. Academics come easily to him,, and he gets good grades, but academics aren't his passion.

Would be applying for either 7th in 2022 or 9th in 2024.

Live in MoCo and work in DC. Would be applying for financial aid.
