OP here. I live in a very….dramatic….community. Mostly people from another culture where jealousy and control are the norm. Once I dated a hot guy (I’m divorced) and my friends’ husbands banned me from bringing him to get-togethers in case their wives, I dunno, hooked up with him in the bathroom.

So I’m not totally surprised, but just wanted a reality check that this isn’t normal. I don’t want to cause trouble for anyone but I also don’t want to be treated like I’m some temptress looking to steal husbands (that I don’t even want, ha).

Yes, I talk to all kinds of parents. I’ve never thought about playgrounds or school or other settings where I encounter other parents as a place to meet people romantically, though I’m happily married. It would not bother me or my DH if someone asked one of us out in that setting, either (though it would catch us off guard). We’d just politely decline, explain we we are married, and move on.

It sounds like that other family might have some stuff going on.

Bizarre and absurd. Of course I talk to all parents. The fact that a grown woman has her daughter policing her father is really disturbing.

This is bizarre. Yes I took to people of any gender.

I was at the playground yesterday with my kids and started chitchatting with a dad. He and his daughters were the only other people there.

One of his daughters ran over and said “daddy, mommy told you NOT to talk to other girls”. From then on, if he talked to me, she’d run over and say “daddy remember what I said!” Then she came over to me and asked if I had a husband.

I just walked over to the other side of the park after that because I didn’t want to cause trouble or keep putting this little girl in the middle, but is this normal? Is it playground etiquette to not talk to anyone of the opposite sex?
