If the dad is living out of the school district it's hard to see how they'd get to the school to GET the free lunch for the kid. They could save the gas money and buy food.

Summer meals programs aren't individually certified or tied to school enrollment, you just show up at any meal site and get the meal-no application or registration required.

In my city, we have daily free lunch (fed summer meals program) and 2x week they give out an additional 8-10lb box of food to take home. If this was my ex and I thought they had real need (they weren't spending all their money on drugs) I would hand over the $300 child payment. If not the payment, I would send the kid with food or a grocery gift card. It's really frustrating to have an ex who isn't taking care of their s***, but it's the greater good for a kid to have a strong relationship with both parents.

She's sticking with the fact that It's his problem to figure out. That's what I thought too. They don't work well together, at all.

I can't imagine being so bitter that I would let my child go hungry, rather than help out by shortening the visit or contributing to groceries.

Unless she knows this is a play by her X to either get her to give $$ or get out of spending time with son.
People manipulate each other all the time. She probably knows his tricks and manipulations and is calling BS.

Wtf! No way in hell my child would be there another day. They can’t feed themselves. They get money from me and it’s doubtful my kid gets fed. My son would be back with me. They can Skype.

Is she paying appropriate child support?

They can use food pantries, get SNAP or WIC, take him for free meals https://www.nokidhungry.org/find-free-meals

If the kid got a pandemic EBT card I'd send it with him. If the dad wants to modify custody and the mom is amenable, that's an ok option too.

His failure to plan is bad but letting the child suffer is worse. Can she research a food bank that the dad can go to? Contact a local church?

Does the school provide free lunch? Ours does every day - even in the summer.

A friend just told his child's mother this. He's having trouble finding work his girlfriend is working two jobs. They can't afford to feed the child for a full month.

What happens in a situation like this?

The mom told him that it's his problem to figure out.
