I upgraded to a Gigabit early in the pandemic and it's been perfect for us.

Family of 4, 1 teen, 1 college-age, everyone working/schooling from home, all of our TV is streaming, both kids have their own video gaming consules.

100 Mbps is enough.

For gaming and streaming, the numbers that matter most are upload speed and latency (ping times). Figure on needing 10Mbps upload per streamer at a time. So, ideally, you would want 40Mbps symmetrical service, at least. Additional download speed is a bonus. You could probably get by with less than this if necessary.

we went with 400, 1 gig is overkill for most families... but if your teens are into ONLINE gaming than go for the gig

It's gigaBIT. Not gigaBYTE. A byte has 8 bits in it. It's why you hear them call the Internet speed gigabit. If it was gigabyte Internet, it would be 8 times as fast.
