Not if the other parent lives in another state. How competitive are Madison or Marshall?

Extremely competitive for boys, slightly less for girls. As a freshman rec player it’s going to be tough.

And this is why sports should be added to middle schools.

Starting in 7th wouldn’t help if they haven’t played. In a normal year, there are after school club sports in middle school. They are not as competitive as the rec programs. We have so many rec options around here even that have options for free and reduced fees.

And sometimes the kids who play travel soccer don’t even try out for the team because it is not a good use of their time and the competition can be weak. And some really unathletic kids never make a team.
I thought most travel soccer teams around here don’t allow you to do both. How could one be on a travel soccer team in the spring AND do HS soccer. Practice and games overlap in spring. You’d have to choose one or other.

None of us are saying that. It’s all about competition. Some schools in the area have hundreds trying out for any given sport and travel players won’t make it. Other schools take everyone. It could be this way at any given school for soccer, basketball, swim, tennis, etc. that’s why we need to know which school. Every school has some team you can walk into. We don’t know how competitive soccer is at Ops.

This is VERY school specific. Some high schools in FCPS you can basically just show up, others are extremely competitive. If you specify the high school, you will get better responses.

He should try out but chances are very low or zero at most schools. There are so many that go to tryouts. The good news is that there are rec programs all through soccer and he can still play. My daughter has played since kindergarten year round in rec and knows she won’t make the HS team but never had ambitions to do so. She plans on playing rec through high school for fun. She is a good rec player and enjoys it.

depends on the school and if we're talking about the boys team or the girls team at a particular school. My daughter only took up soccer a few years ago and never played travel. She played on the JV team - yes I think everyone who tries out makes it. But she also got some good playing time for a freshman. Sophomores got the most playing time.

I know the JV boys team at the same school was so competitive that boys who'd played travel for several years warmed the bench the entire season

My DS who has played each fall/spring for years but was never on a travel team hasn't been able to make the HS team after two years of trying. They could fill 4 teams with the number of kids who show up to try out.

That's going to depend on the school. I would say if dc plays regularly he/she has a great shot and should certainly go out for it! Good luck and wishing success.
