Can nanny take a uber/rent a bike/car. For ausculta a short distance it should be cheap… she can also walk and if one day is raining a lot, then you can take her to the metro or pick her up… it should be an exception and not something you have to do everyday

Does the metro have a parking garage?

Could you let the nanny drive your car to the garage at the end of the day (overnight at the garage) and then drive it to your house the following morning? Then you’re just driving her to the metro on Monday morning abd Friday evening (assuming you only need your minivan during the weekend.)

Also, are you willing to pay several hundred a month for a parking pass?

I would be willing to try with the nanny, but her transportation is her responsibility. Meaning, she has to figure out how to get to your house at 8am and work until 5pm. Her commute is not your problem—you have your own commute to worry about.

Allowing the nanny to use your car to drive your children is perfectly reasonable. You becoming the nanny’s chauffeur is idiotic.

Agreed. This sounds astronomically inconvenient. Can you imagine getting ready on a busy morning and your kid spills Cheerios all over themselves or has a blowout and YOU a have to clean that up to go get the nanny?

Hard no. You will hate this.

Then as soon as you get home when your kid is happily playing with playdoh you have to stop that to drive nanny and then re-engage them in something else before you can even start dinner? This sounds like such a bad setup, you basically negate the benefits of having a nanny but you’re still paying nanny rates.

If it is impossible to walk… unless she was Exception - substantial experience, the highest references, child development degrees/medical specialists for specific child health concerns, etc, this would be a deal breaker.

Don’t make her problem (lack of car) your problem

This. I don't know why you (or she?) think it would be your responsibility to get her to work. I can't think of any job where that is the case. If someone is a nurse at a hospital, does the hospital director come pick them up from the metro to drive them into work? No. If someone works as a produce stocker at the grocery store, do you think the store manager picks them up to bring them to work? No. They find a way to get there on their own.

Is there any way that you + your spouse can assist her w/purchasing an inexpensive vehicle?

If not, you just may have to continue your search.

I drive my employer’s car, but I’m a live-in.

Doesn’t sound like a good fit. Don’t hire.

Juggling that extra pick-up and drop-off will be more complicated than it seems and one of the major benefits of having a nanny is that care shows up at your door.

There will be a bunch of nannies available once school opens in the fall.

We met a nanny we really like but there is one potential issue - she knows how to drive and has a license, but doesn’t have her own car. She has great experience and seems wonderful, but we are concerned about hiring someone without a car for a couple reasons. First off, she can get to us on the Metro fairly easily, but it means we would need to pick her up from the station every morning and drop her off at the end of the day. It’s a 5 min drive to the station which is minimal, but generally only DH OR I are home then so we would need to get the kids in the car too which isn’t ideal, especially in the evening which would interrupt dinner prep and getting the kids fed.

At her current job she works somewhere very walkable and doesn’t need to drive at all, but with us she would need to drive one of our cars (which we are ok with conceptually), but I am a little concerned that although she has a license she drives very rarely, so is that the safest option for my kids?

Does anyone have a nanny who doesn’t have a car and drives your vehicle? Does it work well or it is an issue? Is it worth hiring an amazing nanny with the inconvenience of the 2x per day pick ups / drop offs?
