Given how risk-averse Duran and the SB were since Covid started, my guess is masks will be mandatory for all. They won't want to be bothered with tracking who is vaccinated and who is not.. It's easier to make everyone wear a mask.

NP. I'm not worried about their feelings so much as their willingness to keep masking when the adults around them aren't, and their ability to understand why. When my kids were in early ES they had a VERY strong sense of what was and was not fair. And yeah, it isn't fair, but who can suck it up and put on a mask to set an example? Adults, espeically adults who work with kids and set examples in so many other ways. I don't know a single teacher of 11 and under who is opposed to wearing a mask this fall.

All of the adults were vaccinated when we went back in March, and they had us wear them to model. I bet they will ask the elementary staff to do the same this year. Most teachers won’t mind.

+1. The back and forth is so stressful. I’ll probably wear a mask for most of the year, not because of covid but all the other illnesses I pick up in a year.

In Australia, public health officials found that the Delta variant spread outside, in mere seconds, from one person passing another person at an outdoor cafe. These were unvaccinated adults but it is pretty astounding that it is this transmissible.

Proof of vaccination should be requested to assess what percentage of the school population is vaccinated. Otherwise the opportunity for an outbreak like the one stemming from the Illinois summer camp seems likely (low proportion of staff and campers were vaccinated). And Illinois has a good proportion of the population vaccinated. I would think that if the total school population is 70 percent or more who are vaccinated, then it seems that masks can just be recommended rather than required.

So long as large numbers of kids are ineligible to be vaccinated, masks should be required. Vaccinated people can still transmit the virus! It’s risky to have unmasked adults/older kids mixing with unvaccinated younger kids. Especially given the higher viral loads and transmissibility of the Delta variants. If we want a better chance at schools staying open, it behooves us to continue masking.

I am a teacher and parent and hope the districts will let the vaccinated teachers and students go without masks. I am happy to provide proof for myself and my own kids if it means we no longer have to mask.
